BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Start with the right preparation.

This preparation is for pharmacists whose individual recognition pathway requires a Kenntnisprüfung. Review the recognition decision and the subject specified by the authority. Your German must support discussing professional questions; course placement does not determine official admission.

Understand the official examination.

KP is an oral examination in German, lasting 30–60 minutes per applicant. It covers pharmacy practice (Praxis), pharmacy law (Recht) and an additional subject determined by the recognition authority based on your qualification assessment. The authority issues Approbation once all licensing requirements are met.

A PURPOSEFUL COURSE OUTLINE

Know what you will work on.

Content direction for the English review edition. The final hours, sequence and included activities will be fixed in the approved cohort specification.

01 · Recht — German pharmacy law

Understand and apply the core legal framework: ApoG (pharmacies), ApBetrO (pharmacy operations), AMG (medicines), AMVV (prescriptions), and BtMG/BtMVV (controlled substances). Preparation also addresses professional duties, medicines advertising, hazardous substances, health-insurance and pricing rules. This is a preparation outline, not an exhaustive statutory syllabus.

Practice focus

Use current legal sources to explain a pharmacy scenario, the pharmacist’s responsibility, documentation and relevant exceptions.

02 · Praxis — Working in the pharmacy

Connect professional knowledge with everyday pharmacy decisions: review prescriptions, clarify unclear information, dispense medicines, explain use and storage, and communicate with patients, prescribers and the pharmacy team. Include Rezeptur and Defektur principles, quality assurance and documentation.

Practice focus

Work through a prescription or preparation scenario and justify the checks, clarification, dispensing and documentation steps.

03 · Beratung & Selbstmedikation — Within Praxis

Conduct a structured patient consultation: clarify symptoms, duration, existing treatment and relevant circumstances; assess suitable non-prescription options; explain dose, use and duration; and recognise red flags and the limits of self-medication. These are practice topics, not separate statutory KP examination subjects.

Practice focus

Roleplay an OTC consultation, explain your recommendation and identify when medical assessment is needed instead of self-treatment.

04 · Pharmacology & applied pharmacotherapy

Revise medicine classes, mechanisms of action, indications, doses, contraindications, adverse effects and interactions, and apply them to pharmacy cases. Applied pharmacotherapy supports Praxis; pharmacology is not a fixed third examination subject for every applicant. Any separately specified subject follows the authority’s decision.

Practice focus

Explain a medicine-related decision, assess risks and interactions, and adapt your reasoning to the patient information provided.

05 · Your additional subject

Use the competent authority’s decision to identify the subject requiring additional preparation. Do not assume the same extension for every learner.

Practice focus

Create a targeted revision map from the stated differences and identify coverage that needs to be confirmed.

06 · Oral case defence & final revision

Practise giving a clear answer, responding to follow-up questions and distinguishing uncertainty from a justified professional conclusion.

Practice focus

Complete an oral mock examination, receive individual feedback and organise the final revision priorities.

SEE THE LEARNING APPROACH

From an answer to a reasoned response.

An original illustrative task, not an actual examination question or individual medical advice.

THE TASK

A realistic communication challenge.

A fictional prescription contains an unclear detail. Explain which information you would check, distinguish the applicable dispensing rules from a guess, describe the clarification step and set out the documentation considerations. This is an original teaching example, not an official exam question.

THE FEEDBACK

Understand what to improve.

  • Is the professional reasoning structured and relevant?
  • Are legal sources distinguished from memory or assumptions?
  • Does the answer identify missing information and appropriate clarification?
  • Can the learner explain consequences and respond to follow-up questions?

INDIVIDUAL REVIEW & SIMULATION

Practise. Reflect. Revise with purpose.

Our exam-preparation courses include final individual review and exam-style simulation. These support preparation; they are not official exams or guarantees of passing.

Simulate

Work through tasks appropriate to your programme and provider.

Review

Identify strengths, recurring errors and gaps in explanation.

Revise

Use a personal revision plan to prioritise further practice.

The model below reserves space for the number, duration and included arrangements. Additional support is not implied unless specified.

CLEAR ANSWERS FOR YOUR JOURNEY

Choose with a clearer understanding.

Does every internationally qualified pharmacist need KP?

Do not assume so. The recognition pathway and the competent authority’s decision determine whether a knowledge examination is required.

Is KP the same as the third German state examination?

No. The examinations share professional subject areas, but KP has its own examination framework. A resource for the third state examination must be checked before being reused for KP.

Does KP consist only of Recht and Praxis?

These are the two core areas: Spezielle Rechtsgebiete für Apotheker and Pharmazeutische Praxis. The examination also covers an additional subject determined by the recognition authority based on your qualification assessment. Your recognition decision defines that subject.

Are Beratung, Selbstmedikation and pharmacology separate examination sections?

Patient counselling, self-medication and applied pharmacotherapy belong within practical preparation. They should not be presented as separate statutory KP sections. Pharmacology may also require targeted preparation where it is the additional subject specified by the authority.

Can I prepare without my recognition decision?

You can discuss general learning needs, but the specific examination scope and eligibility cannot be inferred without the applicable authority information.

Will the course give me Approbation?

No. It is preparation. The competent authority checks the full recognition requirements and issues the professional licence.

Are FSP and KP preparation interchangeable?

No. FSP focuses on professional communication; KP examines the required professional knowledge and abilities. Communication practice supports both, but the learning objectives differ.
